As part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can use FSA or HSA money to purchase over-the-counter (OTC) medications such as Tylenol or Advil. This change is retroactively effective to January 1, 2020.
Any over-the-counter medicines or drugs purchased prior to January 1, 2020, are only eligible for reimbursement with a physician's prescription. Any over-the-counter medicines or drugs purchased after January 1, 2020 do not require a prescription.
Any items used for general health or cosmetic purposes are not eligible.
For more information on what pre-tax products and services are eligible, refer to this eligibility list.
Please note that the COVID related rules expired in October 2023.
