General requirements
Qualified dependent care expenses are determined by IRS Child and Dependent Care Expenses Publication 503.
DCFSA expenses must be "work-related," meaning the service is rendered while you're at work or school.
The dependent must be 13 years old or younger, or older than 13 and physically or mentally incapable of self-care.
Eligible Expenses
The following are examples of eligible expenses:
-
Daycare
-
Preschool
-
Babysitter
-
After-school care
-
Summer day camp
The following are examples of expenses that are NOT eligible:
-
Tutoring
-
Sports lessons
-
Private school tuition fees
-
Babysitting by another one of your tax dependents (i.e. a sibling)
-
Virtual care (i.e. online day camps, online classes)
-

The primary purpose of the dependent care activity must be for the care and safety of the dependent while you are working. Sports teams, music lessons, and other activities where the primary purpose is to teach them a new skill or develop a talent most likely won't be eligible.
