Important: Balance due only applies to pre-tax accounts and users with the Pre-tax Forma Card.
What is a balance due?
If you make a purchase that is later determined to be ineligible, you owe the amount you spent back to the original pre-tax account. Your Pre-tax Forma Card (and any dependent cards) will be locked until the balance is repaid.
This can happen in 2 ways:
-
Ineligible card transaction
-
Ineligible approved and paid claim
As you continue to file claims for eligible out-of-pocket spending, the ineligible amount will automatically be subtracted from your next reimbursements until the balance is repaid.
Here's an example
Imagine you made a $100 card transaction on items you thought were eligible for your HSA. But once the transaction is reviewed and found to be ineligible, you owe that $100 back to your HSA.
Then, you filed a $150 claim for a different purchase that was HSA-eligible. Once the claim is processed and approved, $100 will be subtracted from your reimbursement, because that's how much you owe back to your HSA. Then you'll be reimbursed $50, and your balance will be repaid.
How can I tell if I owe a balance?
If you have a balance due, you'll see the amount at the top of the details page for the pre-tax account, next to your available balance.
